About This Role

Until is a moonshot company building a “pause button” for biology. Our near-term focus is organ-scale reversible cryopreservation: preserving donated organs at subzero temperatures without ice formation, then rewarming them uniformly for transplant. By solving this grand challenge, we’re laying the foundation for whole-body reversible cryopreservation, giving patients a bridge to future cures.

To achieve our goal, we are assembling an interdisciplinary team to develop perfusion systems, cryoprotectant formulations, and vitrification and rewarming hardware.

We envision a future where no transplantable organ is lost to logistics, and no terminal diagnosis is final because patients can safely wait for future medicine to arrive.

About the Role

We are seeking a Head of Imaging to lead the design, development, and deployment of custom imaging systems that span functional imaging, histology, and whole-organ analysis. This role will be pivotal in advancing our ability to visualize and quantify biological structure and function across multiple scales — from subcellular detail to intact organs and whole-body rodent models.

The ideal candidate is both an inventive builder and a scientific leader, with a track record of developing novel imaging hardware and methodologies. You will collaborate closely with biologists, physicists, and hardware engineers to pioneer imaging systems purpose-built for cryopreservation research.

Key Responsibilities

Build and oversee custom microscopes and imaging platforms tailored to functional imaging, histology, and whole-organ analysis.

Hire, mentor, and lead a team of imaging scientists and engineers.

Foster a culture of creativity, precision, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Work with molecular biologists, materials scientists, and organ engineers to design experiments that leverage advanced imaging for mechanistic insight and quality assessment.

Develop imaging pipelines for histological validation, functional assays, and organ-scale structural analysis.

Required Qualifications

PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Optical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).

Proven experience designing and building custom microscopes or imaging systems.

Deep expertise in at least one of the following: multiphoton imaging, light-sheet microscopy, ultrasound, or CT.

Strong track record of applying imaging technologies to biological or medical challenges.

Demonstrated leadership in multidisciplinary teams.

Familiarity with image analysis, computational reconstruction, and quantitative imaging pipelines.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience imaging complex tissues or organs under dynamic conditions (e.g., perfusion).

Prior success in transitioning prototypes into robust, reproducible systems for commercial or clinical use.

Publication history with calcium or voltage imaging.
